Have you been wondering about what types of things you can make with those ITH felties? There has to be more to them than just hair bow decorations, right? Well, wonder no more! I am here to help with a fun and easy idea to put those cute felties to use in your next project! Turn a plain old zipper pouch or even a jacket from drab to fab instantly with my tutorial on how to make a feltie zipper pull using your favorite ITH feltie design!

What you will need:

  • ITH feltie machine embroidery design (I have tons over on the main website but any will work as long as they are small!)
  • 3 inches of ribbon (I used a 3mm ribbon for my zipper pull)
  • Jump ring or split ring

Have everything ready? Let’s get this started!

The first thing you are going to need to do is begin the stitching of your feltie up until the point where you will need to add the backing felt. The design should look something like this from the back of the hoop view (okay maybe not exactly like this, my threads were a little crazy but you get the idea):

Once you are at this point, it’s time to add the ribbon. Fold your 3 inch ribbon piece in half so that it creates a loop and secure the ribbon onto the back of your design in the hoop where you’d like for it to go. I placed my ribbon directly in the center for this and secured it with a small amount of tape.

Cover the back of your design and the ribbon with a piece of felt large enough to cover everything up and place your hoop back into the machine for the final stitching that will secure both the backing and the ribbon in place.

Remove your hoop and stabilizer and trim around the feltie to remove all excess felt. Be careful here when trimming – be sure to go around the ribbon and avoid cutting it! Your finished feltie should now look like this:

We’re almost done! That was pretty quick and easy, huh?! Now you only need to join the jump ring (or split ring) to both the ribbon and your zipper.

That’s it! You’re done! In no time at all, you just added your own creative touch to an otherwise plain and boring old zipper. 😉 Here’s a look at how my little zipper pouch turned out:

Experiment and have fun with this! There are so many things that could use a little zipper love such as backpacks, purses, jackets, pencil cases & tons more!
